Solana Activates Target Slot Time Reduction From 350ms to 300ms

Solana's mainnet lowered its slot time, the target interval for block production, from 350 milliseconds (ms) to 300 milliseconds on August 29 Korean time. Anza, a core client development firm, announced the mainnet activation at 00:34, and Solana's official account again confirmed the change had taken effect the following day. This change is the second stage, implemented eight days after the reduction from 400 milliseconds to 350 milliseconds on August 21, and applies half of the four stages laid out in the Solana improvement proposal SIMD-0525. The four consecutive slots assigned to a single validator remain unchanged, so the calculated window in which a leader can delay or reorder transactions falls from 1.4 seconds to 1.2 seconds. However, the compute and data limits per slot are also lowered, so throughput per unit of time does not automatically increase. The next stages, 250 milliseconds and 200 milliseconds, will be decided after slot skip rates and network stability are reviewed.

With the second reduction applied only eight days after the first, Solana's speed roadmap is being executed quickly. The leader's window for controlling ordering shrinks, but the advantage held by validators and searchers with low-latency connections and hardware may grow. The next reduction should be judged by slot skip rates, reorgs, validator concentration, and execution quality on decentralized exchanges rather than by TPS.
