Introduction
Instead of opening the front door, they sit at their desk and open their laptop. Instead of pressing elevator buttons, they click the login button; instead of passing through security gates, they navigate login screens. This is a commute for survival, one in which humanity has begun commuting into games.
We stand at the intersection of two massive curves. On one side, the Great Replacement is underway. Automation and artificial intelligence (AI) are rapidly erasing human jobs through warehouse robots, autonomous vehicles, and generative AI. On the other side, the Great Migration begins. Games, platforms, and the metaverse are no longer mere spaces for leisure; they are becoming the foundation of virtual economies where income, assets, and sometimes even survival itself are at stake.
These shifts have manifested repeatedly throughout history. When economies falter, people lose their livelihoods and relocate in search of new opportunities for survival. Just as farmers displaced by industrialization were pushed into factory districts and transformed into urban laborers, labor has always been redistributed toward where capital and opportunity flow. The “item farms” that shook Korea’s online gaming market, and the surge of labor in virtual worlds during the COVID-19 pandemic, emerged from this same trajectory. These were decisive signals of where human movement turns when physical workplaces shrink, and how labor is reinvented within the uncharted territory of the virtual world.
This article aims to peel back the veneer of terms such as “P2E (Play-to-Earn)” and “X2E”, which have become marketing buzzwords, and to confront them instead as a social phenomenon of digital labor. Its goal is to dissect these early signals of future labor and to articulate what is required for those displaced from the physical economy during the AI transition to establish sustainable foundations within virtual economies.
